In the year 123 B.C., the consul of Rome, Cecil Metel, conquered the islands of Mallorca and Menorca and founded the cities of Palma and Pollentia, the remains of which can be visited just outside Alcúdia. Mallorca thus became part of the Roman empire until the 5th century A.D., when it underwent an invasion at the hands of the Vandals; this turbulent and not particularly well understood period ended with the Byzantine conquest in 534. From this period there are remains of small primitive Paleochristian basilicas, such as Sa Carrotja, which can be visited at Porto Cristo, or Son Peretó, between Manacor and Sant Llorenç des Cardasssar.
