Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar is a seaside village at the south-west of Tramuntana´s mountains, on the north coast of Mallorca (Majorca). Its origins are from the X century, during the muslim domination of Mallorca. The most characteristic feature in Banyalbufar are the "marjades" (stepped slopes), which go down to the sea through steps. There, malvasy grape was used to be grown. It produced an excellent wine, well appreciated both in and out of Mallorca, and which was attributed with healing properties. Unfortunately, by the end of the XIX century, phylloxera killed the whole vineyard. As a result, vegetables started to be grown instead in the "marjades", benefiting from the generous wells. Nevertheless, agriculture has only a testimonial role in Banyalbufar´s economic field, where all activities are around tourism.

There are a few hotels to spend a peaceful holiday in this landscape of extraordinary beauty. There are also some shops, bars, restaurants and cafeterias.

One of the most emblematic buildings in Banyalbufar is La Baronia, a XVI century edifice, centre of the old feudal life, with a remarkable yard and a defence tower -now a hotel. Nativitat de Maria Church, at the central square, is a temple with a semibarrel-vaulted nave and chapels at the sides. It is one of the outstanding buildings, among others that can be found in the narrow streets of Banyalbufar, where a great deal of popular majorcan architecture, characterized by simplicity, can be seen.

Es Verger tower, also known by Ses Ànimes (the souls), at the 88,6 Km on the C-710 road to Estellencs, is one of the spots where most photographs are taken. From there, amazing views of the north coast of Mallorca (Majorca) can be enjoyed.

Cala Banyalbufar is a cove, with transparent water ideal for diving. It is 100 metres long and 15 metres wide. To get there, we must take the way that goes down Major St along a 500 metres slope.

Port des Canonge

Es Port des Canonge is a small residential district in Banyalbufar´s municipal area formed by second holiday houses. It was developed from 1944 around some old little fishermen houses. There is a 70 metres long cove, often with a dry seaweed cover, where there are small boats and "escars" -traditional contructions used by fishermen to keep their boats and the fishing tackle.
