Sencelles

Lying in the districts of Es Pla and Raiguer, the municipality of Sencelles has preserved its charm and harmony, typical features of traditional, rural Mallorcan life. Its basically level land is criss-crossed by three torrents, which form a scenic, rustic landscape among holm oak trees and farmlands of almond and fig trees and vineyards.

The Binissalem denomination of origin attests to the quality of the area´s wine, which was the true driving force behind the local economy not so long ago.

A charismatic personage in Sencelles was Sor Francinaina Cirer (1781-1855), who was venerated and beatified in 1989. Founded Ca ses Monges, the home of the Sisters of Charity, one of the most important elements in Sencelles´ heritage, today houses a museum.

Other recommended visits are to the eighteenth-century church of Sant Pere, the Rectory (1650), the flourmills at Can Maví and Sa Cometa and the crosses which dot the village. A little over 1 km from Sencelles on the road to Inca is Son Fred Talayot, which attests to population in the area since prehistoric times.

Lastly, the hamlets in the municipality, formerly ancient Arab farmsteads, preserve the intimate essence of life in the Mallorcan countryside. Biniali, with the church of Sant Cristòfol and the windmill of Can Xico, and Ruberts are the two most interesting.
