Sant Lluís

Sant Lluís

The small town of Sant Lluís is situated to the south of Maó. It was built by the French in the second half of the 18th century during the period of French rule on the island. It was originally designed to provide accommodation for the French troops, as reflected in the grid-like layout of the streets.

The most important building is the church in the Neoclassical style dedicated to King Louis IX. Probably the other best-known building in Sant Lluís is the Molí de Dalt, an old flour mill that has now been converted into an ethnology museum. In the old part of the town, the houses have the simple façades that are typical of traditional Minorcan architecture.
